The words explained

A quick guide to the insurance terms on this page.

The equipment, stock, fixtures and fittings you keep at your premises to run the business. That's what this cover protects. The building itself is insured separately.
A specific cause of loss the policy covers: fire, theft, flood, storm and the like. Damage from a cause not on the list isn't covered unless accidental damage is added.
Settling a claim by replacing an item with a brand-new equivalent, rather than deducting for age or wear. Most contents are covered this way; stock is the main exception.
The most the policy will pay for your contents. Set it too low and a claim can be scaled back, so keep it in line with what everything would cost to replace.
Cover for sudden, unexpected damage that isn't tied to a named peril, the everyday spills, drops and knocks, available as an option on top of the core cover.
The goods, materials and finished products you hold to sell or use. Usually settled at its cost to you rather than on a new-for-old basis.

Questions, answered

The movable things you use to run the business at your premises: equipment, computers, tools, stock, furniture, and the fixtures and fittings you've installed. The building itself is covered separately under buildings insurance.

Not by default. Business Contents covers items at your premises. If you take tools or equipment to client sites, in transit or to events, add All Risks to cover them wherever they go.

It's available as an option. The core cover handles named events like fire, theft and flood; adding accidental damage extends it to the everyday knocks and spills that aren't tied to a specific peril.

Most items are replaced new-for-old, so you're not left out of pocket for depreciation. Some categories, stock for example, are settled at their cost to you. We'll spell out the basis when you get a quote.

Home contents policies rarely cover equipment or stock used for work, so business kit at home often needs its own cover. Business Contents can protect it where it's kept; if it also travels, add All Risks to cover it wherever it goes.

Business Contents protects what's at your premises. A few things sit outside it:

  • Items taken off-site. Consider All Risks.
  • Cyber-related losses. That's Cyber.
  • Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, or mechanical and electrical breakdown.
  • Money, jewellery and other valuables, unless specifically listed.

Get covered before you need it.

One application covers Business Contents alongside the other modules you need, and caremate™ returns your package and price in minutes. Sort it now, so the next bad day is a claim you make, not a bill you swallow.
